Updated: Jun 24
One of New Chitose Airport's greatest strengths is that a layover does not have to mean idle waiting. The airport offers an onsen, a cinema, lounges, and Hokkaido ramen — all under one roof. That said, misjudging the time available can mean missing your flight. This guide organizes your options by layover length: 1 hour, 2 hours, and 3 hours or more.

First: Understand the Terminal Layout and Time Requirements
Before making any plans, familiarize yourself with the terminal structure and the minimum time buffers you will need.

New Chitose Airport consists of three buildings: the Domestic Passenger Terminal, the International Passenger Terminal, and the Connecting Facility. The major entertainment venues are concentrated on the 4th floor of the domestic terminal and the 3rd floor of the connecting facility.
Here are the minimum recommended transit times by connection type.
Connection Type | Minimum Recommended Time |
Domestic to domestic (major airline) | 45 minutes to 1 hour |
Between LCCs or different airlines | 2 hours or more |
International to domestic | 2 hours or more |
If you need to exit the restricted boarding area and re-enter security, allow 15–30 minutes for the checkpoint. Baggage transfers are handled automatically when you are on the same airline and booking number; if you are on a separate booking, check at the counter.
Note: North Lounge (International Terminal, 4F) is scheduled to close on June 30, 2026. If you want to use a lounge in the international terminal, check Café Sky Library (International Terminal, 4F) instead.

Shopping and souvenirs | Domestic 2F | 15–30 min | Varies | Works for 1-hour layovers |
1-Hour Plan (Usable Time: 30–40 Minutes)
With roughly 1 hour of transit time, you need to be back at the gate 20–30 minutes before departure — leaving only 30–40 minutes of free time. Skip the onsen and cinema entirely. Focus on shopping and the lounge.
Plan A: Hokkaido Sweets and a Quick Bite
Activity | Location | Time |
Hokkaido sweets and souvenir shopping | Domestic 2F Shopping World | 15–20 min |
Light meal or coffee at a café | Domestic 2F–3F café | 15–20 min |
The domestic 2F is lined with shops carrying Hokkaido's signature confections — a quick and efficient stop for last-minute gifts before boarding.
Plan B: Relax in the Lounge
The Super Lounge on domestic 3F charges ¥1,500 (soft drinks included) and offers Wi-Fi, power outlets, and reading materials. Gold card members enter free. Even 30–40 minutes here makes for a calm, comfortable break before your flight. (Source: Hokkaido Airport Super Lounge page / confirmed June 3, 2026)
2-Hour Plan (Usable Time: About 90 Minutes)
With about 2 hours of transit, you have roughly 90 minutes of free time before heading to the gate 30 minutes before departure. A meal combined with shopping, or a relaxed stretch in the lounge, are both realistic options.
Plan A: Meal + Shopping
Activity | Location | Time |
Ramen at Hokkaido Ramen Dojo | Domestic 3F (e.g., Ebi Soba Ichigen) | 45–60 min (including possible wait) |
Souvenirs and sweets | Domestic 2F / Connecting Facility | 20–30 min |
Hokkaido Ramen Dojo is a dining zone with several well-known ramen shops. During peak hours, expect a wait. Build in extra time and move at a relaxed pace.
Plan B: Lounge + Light Shopping
Spend 60–80 minutes at the Super Lounge (3F, 140 seats) and use the remaining time for souvenir shopping on domestic 2F (10–20 minutes). The lounge has books, Wi-Fi, and phone booths. The Annex (4F, 81 seats) has private booths suited for work or reading. Families with young children may also enjoy combining the lounge with Hello Kitty Happy Flight in the connecting facility (45–60 minutes).
3-Hour+ Plan (Usable Time: About 150 Minutes)
With 3 or more hours, you can enjoy experiences that are unique to this airport — an onsen, a movie, or Hello Kitty Happy Flight. Be mindful of each facility's restrictions once you are inside.

With 3 or more hours of transit time, "time-intensive" venues like the onsen and cinema become viable. Note that once you check in at the onsen, you cannot leave the building.
Plan A: Refresh at the Onsen
Activity | Location | Time |
Shopping and food (do this first) | Domestic 2F–3F | 20–30 min |
New Chitose Airport Onsen | Domestic 4F Oasis Park | 60–120 min |
Important onsen notice: Once you check in, you cannot exit the building. Complete all shopping, dining, and souvenir purchases before entering the onsen. Large luggage can be stored at the cloakroom. Guests with tattoos are not permitted to use the baths.
Hours: 10:00 to 9:00 the following morning (last entry 7:30). Standard admission: adults ¥2,600, children (elementary school age) ¥1,300, preschoolers free. The early-bird rate (5:00–8:00) reduces adult admission to ¥1,300. For full details, see the New Chitose Airport Onsen Guide (CTS-EX-02). Plan B: Movie + Light Meal
Activity | Location | Time |
Movie screening | Domestic 4F New Chitose Airport Theater | 90–120 min |
Light meal or coffee | Domestic 3F | 20–30 min |
The theater has 3 screens with a combined total of 377 seats. Check the official website for showtimes. You cannot easily leave mid-screening, so always verify your departure time against the film's runtime before buying a ticket. Choose a film that leaves you comfortable time to reach your gate. Plan C: Happy Flight + Ramen + Shopping (Families with Children)
Hello Kitty Happy Flight (Connecting Facility 3F, 45–60 min) → Hokkaido Ramen Dojo (Domestic 3F, 40–60 min) → Souvenir shopping (Domestic 2F, 20–30 min). Factor in 5–10 minutes of walking time between the connecting facility and the domestic terminal.
International Terminal Lounges from July 2026
North Lounge (International Terminal 4F) is scheduled to close on June 30, 2026. After that date, travelers departing on international flights who want lounge access should head to Café Sky Library (International Terminal 4F). The café is open to all travelers at no charge and also accepts Priority Pass and Dragon Pass. Standard hours are 11:00–17:00 (Monday and Tuesday: 11:00–22:00). It has 44 seats, all non-smoking. Food and drinks are available for purchase. (Source: Hokkaido Airport International Lounge page / confirmed June 3, 2026)
For full lounge details, see the New Chitose Airport Lounge Guide (CTS-FC-05).
Summary: Best Use of Your Layover by Duration
1 hour: Stick to shopping and the lounge. 2 hours: Combine a meal with shopping, or enjoy a relaxed session in the lounge. 3 hours or more: The onsen, cinema, and Happy Flight all become viable options. Always check the latest information on each facility's official website. Remember to finish your shopping before entering the onsen.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about using the airport during a layover.
Can I use the onsen with a 1-hour layover?
No — once you check in at the onsen, you cannot leave the building, making 1 or even 2 hours insufficient. The onsen is best reserved for layovers of 3 hours or more.
Can I use the lounge without a credit card?
Yes. The domestic Super Lounge (3F and 4F) accepts walk-in guests for ¥1,500, which includes soft drinks.
What happens if my flight departs while I am watching a movie?
Always check your departure time against the film's running time (90–120 minutes) before buying a ticket. We recommend having at least 3 hours of transit time before seeing a film.
Can I go to Ramen Dojo (domestic 3F) after arriving on an international flight?
You can reach the domestic terminal via the connecting facility. Depending on your route, you may need to pass through security again — please check with airport staff.
